Digging In

Good morning, I thought I'd take a second on this chilly morning and give you an update on our progress.  It's chilly to us anyway, some of you would laugh at our idea of cold.  Some would be walking around in t-shirts while we wore our winter coats!

We've been here six months now.  Time goes by quickly when you're busy, busy, busy.  There was lots of work to do, inside and out.  Most of our time and energy has been on cleaning up and cleaning out and moving in.  There will be many, MANY more projects to tackle, but I'll get you caught up on what we've planted so far.

The property already had several pecan trees and there were wild blackberries growing along one fence row.  There were muscadine grapes that were planted many years before but had gotten out of control and reached the tops of the trees.  So that's where we started.  The pecans were so plentiful this year we had trouble with the limbs breaking from being so heavy.  We've been working hard to reclaim the grapevine jungle.  It's been a massive undertaking and we are not done yet, but it is a vast improvement.  Hopefully the grapevine will survive its traumatic "haircut".

We've added lots of new things.  They are small and will take a couple of years to really start to produce, but it's fun to see things taking shape.
  • Satsuma Mandarin Orange
  • Nectarine
  • Peach trees--we've planted a couple of Florida Queen, with other varieties coming soon
  • Pear trees--our varieties are Florda Home, Baldwin and Pineapple
  • Pomegranate
  • Fig--Brown Turkey
  • Lemon--Lisbon
  • Apple trees--a couple of Anna, a Dorsett Gold, Ein Shemer and a Yates
  • Plum--Methley
We've added a new area of grapevines for table grape varieties.  We have Catawba, Concord and Champanelle.

We've also been planting the berries.
  • Thornless blackberries--Apache and Triplecrown
  • Raspberries--Dorman Red, Heritage and Jewel (a black raspberry)
  • Blueberries--Premier, Emerald, Misty, Brightwell, Chaucer, O'Neal, Biloxi
And we were excited to be able to go last weekend and relocate some blueberries from an old home place that was being put up for sale.  Some of those bushes are six feet tall.

And just in case you were wondering, the chickens are loving their new home in the country.

We've added a rooster but he's still young, so no setting hens or baby chicks yet.

Henry, making his rounds

Right now I'm busy plotting garden plans and need to go start some seeds...and do some schoolwork with the kids.
