That New House Smell

Yesterday was fun, but busy--the excitement of keys to a new house (new to us anyway).  Keys to a new life.  Keys to infinite possibilities.

And a new life comes at the cost of a lot of elbow grease and sweat equity as the saying goes.  Yesterday was the first day of many.

It was strange to step into the house empty for the first time.  It's all about cleaning up, freshening up a bit, these days.  There are a million things I want to do inside and out, but first things first.  And that means broom and mop.

I looked on the internet for an idea of what needed to be done for cleaning a new house.  I was afraid in all the excitement, I'd forget something important.  I want a fresh start before bringing in the boxes...or the paint brushes.

I found this handy chart that was printable at askannamoseley.com/2013/10/clean-your-house-before-you-move-in/

I posted this on the refrigerator and put all the cleaning supplies on the kitchen counter.  I just want y'all to know, the results were

AMAZING!!!

Not just because the house got cleaner.  It was the people.  The kids each picked a room to clean and went to work.  No questions asked.  They did a task, referred back to the list, and did another.  I never had to say a word, just kept plugging away at my assigned room, the kitchen.

Now I do have some great kids, but even I was speechless at all they did--and did happily--yesterday.  Because there was a chart on the fridge.  I think this Anna lady and I are gonna be good friends!

One more game changer yesterday.  There are two big trees planted close to the back of the house.  Now you know I love an oak tree, but even I agreed that it needed a little loving pruning.  When you looked out the kitchen window all you got was a view of a few scraggly limbs.  My sweet husband found some loppers in the barn and went to work on a remedy.

New view from the kitchen window

My advice on a move?  Lop and chart, people.  Lop and chart.
